According to the reply to an RTI application by RTI activist Anil Galgali, Bhartiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited (BRBNMPL) said that it charges RBI Rs 3,090 for printing 1,000 notes of Rs 500, same as that for the demonetised Rs 500 note.

The cost includes the expenditure of paper, printing and other expenses as well. Galgali also informed that RBI buys the currency notes from BRBNMPL which is the official supplier for printing and currency notes.

The activist had also sought information regarding the details of the quantity ordered to print its total amount contract, the amount released and amount pending. But the BRBNMPL refused to reveal the information as it falls under the ambit of section 8(1) (a) of the RTI, 2005. He is surprised by the fact that RBI still hasn't revealed proper data about the currency notes.
