Durga puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindus, began in different parts of Assam on Friday with puja committees opening their pandals after special rituals on ‘Maha Sasthi’.

Police are also on their toes and special drive is being carried out to contain anti-social activities while vehicles are being frisked at different entry and exit points of Guwahati city.

Durga Puja is observed in synchronization with the moon's movement. It virtually begins with Mahalaya marking the homecoming of the goddess a week before Bodhan.

According to Hindu tradition, Ram performed Durga puja during autumn, which is generally not considered an auspicious time, to seek her blessings before his battle with Ravan. However, the goddess heard his prayers.

Goddess Durga, the slayer of Mahishashur, is lion-borne and wields an array of arms, including chakra, gada, and bow and arrow in her ten hands.
