Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday formally declared Majuli as a district. Majuli has become the first river island district of the country.

Chief Minister Sonowal, who represents the Majuli assembly seat, upgraded Majuli to a district from sub-division at a function held at Gormur.

A Cabinet meeting of the state government was also held in Majuli on the occasion.

"Today is birth anniversary music maestro Bhupen Hazarika of and we wanted to start the district administrative work on a holy day and pay our respect and gratitude to Bhupen da," Sonowal said.

The Chief Minister paid tributes to Hazarika on his 90th birth anniversary at Majuli.

Residents of the river island have welcomed the move of the state government as it will help them in administrative works. The residents are upbeat and hope the new status will bring in development for this backward region.

Majuli faces frequent floods and heavy erosion because of the Brahmaputra and Subansiri rivers. The island has lost around one third of its area over the past 40 years.

Majuli, the seat of the state's Vaishnavite culture, regained its status as the world's largest riverine island in the Guinness Book of World Records on September 1.
